MOLTHAN WINS 1000 MILE RIDE BUCKLE

"Doc" Molthan and "Whiskers"

Dr. Marian Molthan of Foxglove farm, Laveen, Arizona was one of five riders to
receive the 1000 mile buckle on July 23, 1989 for having completed the Tevis
Ride ten times. Dr. Molthan, rode Spring Ledge Irish Whiskey, a Connemara pony
stallion, eight years consecutively starting in 1977. In 1988 and 1989 she rode
Beau Velours, Whisker's grandson.

The Tevis Ride (Western States Trail Ride) is the original endurance ride asking
for 100 miles in 24 hours. The 1989 ride started at Squaw Valley, California at
5 A.M. July 22 with 199 riders and finished at 5 A.M. at Robie Point, Auburn,
California, with 112 riders - 56% completion. Over the years Foxglove Farm has
had sixteen Tevis Cup entries and there have been fifteen completions - 94%.

Marian Molthan finished in 51st place in 22 hours 23 minutes in 1989 riding Beau
Velours, a nine year old grey Connemara/Arab gelding grandson of the late Spring
Ledge Irish Whiskey. The Connemara community applauds the endurance of Spring
Ledge Irish Whiskey, Beau Velours, and Dr. Marian Molthan.

She did the Tevis Cup 8 times on Whiskey from
1977 to 1984. She rode it in 1988 and 1989 on his grandson, a half arab
gelding named Beau Velours. She also did ride the Great Horse Race in 1976,
3000 miles from New York to California. She did this on 2 Connemara mares,
Bridget and Heather, both of which were 14 years old. She came in 9th out
of 100.
It boggles my mind to think of it. HER endurance was amazing.
