the Perpetual Cup for Best in Show at Clifden 1990

CPBS Stallion list from 1992 - 1996 with Josie Conroy and 1997 with Paddy Folan at Turlough, Rosmuck

Performance testing for Connemara pony stallions was introduced for the first time in January 1992 when a group of 8 stallions were selected by the inspection team to undergo twelve weeks training at a center where they would be assessed on their conformation, temperament, soundness, ease of riding and athletic ability.

 Shown by J. Conroy:

  • Clifden 1989 3rd place 2-3 yr old colts
  • Clifden 1990 SUPREME CHAMPION and Confined Champion, 1st place Registered Stallions and 1st place 2-3 yr old colts
  • Clifden 1994 1st place Stallion, 4 & over
  • Clifden 1995 2nd place Stallion

The list of Approved Stallions standing in Connemara in 1990 was reduced to six, with one new three year old Smokey Duncan (871), leased to the Society by his owner Graham Tulloch, and standing with Josie Conroy at Bunowen. He was bred by Murty McGrath, Cregmore, and was by Westside Frank (817) dam Smokey Jane Grey (7477). His sire, who went to Germany, was by Bobby Brown (731), who was sold to USA, and this line traces back through seven generations to Clonkeehan Auratum (104), while his dam was daughter of the famous mare Smokey (1198) by Gil (43) who was the foundation mare of Murty McGrath's great line of ponies.  67th Annual Pony Show, Clifden - Aug. 16, 1990
The Judges were Mr Pat Daly MRCVS, Miss Eugenia Murray and Mr J. Jones. The winner of the 3 year old colt class was Smokey Duncan (871), beautifully produced by Josie Conroy, and he went on to win the Open Stallion Class with the 19 year old
Abbeyleix Owen (496) standing in 2nd place. This was a great achievement for the Society stallions as the Confined Stallion Class had been dropped and the strong Open Class included several former winners. (1) p. 238

Finally we come to SMOKEY DUNCAN (C.P.S.871) on whose broad shoulders much of the future must hang. Duncan's pedigree extends beyond the confines of a split pedigree chart and is full of good things, Carna Bobby, Carna Dun, Clonkeehan Auratum, Mac Dara, May Boy, they are all there, albeit a way back in some instances. On the female side there is Atlantic Mist, Lissoughter Dolly (granddaughter of Retreat), Callowfeenish Dolly II and Kingstown Grey. All familiar names to most of us. The 'Smokey' family of the McGraths is, on the other hand, one I am not familiar with, maybe because the McGraths live out at Claregalway which I have not visited. Graham believed in this female line and that has to be good enough for me. It was Graham who found and bought Duncan. He was shown at Clifden as a two year old and was placed 3rd. In 1990, in Josie Conroy's experienced hands, not only did he win the open Stallion class but he was awarded the over all Supreme Award at the end of the day. This was a very fitting tribute to Graham Tulloch who has done so much for the Society, the Breed and its Breeders over the years. Duncan is well built and closer to the ground than the other sires reviewed. He maintains the look of a pony in spite of his strong frame and looks to be exactly what Connemara requires at this time. I own a lovely dun pony out of Smokey Duncan called - 'Holy Smoke' . I see that you have a whole page devoted to smokey duncan and thought you might like some info on her and a photo to add her to your list of 'duncan's' offspring.

She was placed
1st in the yearling class at the RDS in 1997 and was 6th in the 4/5 year old and over at the RDS in 2002. She really excels under saddle and especially at jumping and has won various accolades in the north of Ireland. We are now currently competing in the new discipline of 'le trec' with great success. She possesses that typical 'Smokey Duncan' workmanlike attitude to her work !!!! Attached is a photo of holy smoke winning mountain and moorland reserve champion at the balmoral championships , northern ireland.
Keep up the good work , I look forward to visiting your site in the near future !! Best Regards, Jane Bruce (N.Ireland) (July 2003) P.S. Gunsmoke is a really lovely stallion !!
